Spring’s here. New flowers are blooming, young farm animals are bouncing around and there is zero guarantee on what the weather will be doing later on in the same day. While the weather might make choosing an outfit a challenge, it’s the perfect time to consider how easy it is to actually find what you want to wear.
Those well-intentioned “I’ll clear through the pile this weekend” plans can easily get pushed aside, leaving you moving clutter around and spending even more time trying to find what you need.

The Easy Stuff First
Sitting in every wardrobe are some easy wins. The jeans that don’t quite fit right, the top with the stain you keep meaning to get out, the shoes you bought for one wedding three years ago. Start right here.
Pop on your favourite music and make three piles. Keep, donate or bin.
Start with one shelf or one drawer at a time. Taking on the whole wardrobe in one go can quickly turn into an even bigger mess than you started with! Find what method works for you – there is no wrong way to sort through your own gear, but it can definitely be made less overwhelming.
Another option is to group items by season or type – t-shirts, long sleeves, jeans and so on. If you have a lot in your wardrobe, this can be an even better place to start. Then from here, transition your way into the original three piles of keep, donate or bin.
The Trickier Stuff: Sentimental Items
Then there’s the other pile. The stuff that’s not about whether it fits anymore – it’s about what it means to you. Your Pop’s jumper. The dress from your wedding, or the outfit from a trip you took before the kids came along. Your kids’ old baby clothes that you tuck away with grand plans to do something with later down the line.
This is where sorting gets genuinely hard. A few things that might help:
- Separate “sentimental” from “just old.” Not everything from the past deserves a permanent spot in your wardrobe. Ask yourself if you’re keeping it because it matters, or just because it’s always been there.
- You don’t have to keep the whole thing. If it’s the fabric or the memory you love, some people cut a small piece to keep or get it repurposed into something smaller – a cushion, a quilt square – rather than storing the whole garment for years.
- Give it a proper home, not just a corner. If you are keeping it, a dedicated shelf, box, or drawer means it’s actually looked after.
- It’s okay to let some things go. Photographing an item before you donate or pass it on can be a nice middle ground — you keep the memory without needing the physical space forever.
- Do it with someone, if it helps. Sometimes sentimental sorting is just easier with a bit of company, or a cuppa on standby.
There’s no rulebook here, and no timeline either. Some things you’ll be ready to let go of this spring. Others might sit in a “not yet” box for another year, and that’s completely normal.
Even clearing a little clutter can make your everyday routine easier – and make it much quicker to find what you’re looking for.
